Marilyn J. (Cote) Downey 80, of Provincetown, died Tuesday July 24, at Cape Cod Hospital. She was the wife of the late John W. Downey, who died in August of 1984.
Marilyn was the daughter of the late Thomas Cote and Anna (Crawley) Cote of Provincetown. She attended Provincetown High School, and graduated from Becker Jr. College in Worcester.
Marilyn was the former owner of the Shamrock Motel and Shamrock Village & Cottages. She later owned the Bradford House, Motel and Apartments all in Provincetown. She went on to work for 17 years at the Provincetown Inn, until her retirement in 2009,
Active in the community, Marilyn served as a board member and later Chairperson of the Board of the Cape End Manor. She then became a member of the Board of Directors of Seashore Point. Marilyn will be remembered for the key role she played in the creation of this new long term care facility in Provincetown.
She was a member of the Provincetown Chamber of Commerce, serving as its Secretary for many years, as well as a member of the Nautilus Club, the Helping Hand Society and Treasurer of the Provincetown Canteen Unit. She was also a long serving member of the Provincetown Democratic Town Committee.
Marilyn was a Communicant of the St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown. She served as a Eucharistic Minister and a Parish Council Member. An active member of the Church she served on the Building Committee charged with planning and construction of a new building, following the tragic fire that destroyed the church in 2005.
Always a supporter of activities within the community, Marilyn was honored to serve as the Grand Marshall of the 4th of July Parade in 2007.
She is survived by her three children, Deborah Buckley and her husband Michael of Granby, MA, Thomas Downey and his wife Lorraine of South Yarmouth, and Timothy Downey of Provincetown; her grandchildren, Rebecca Buckley Saunders and her husband Major David Saunders, USMC of Rabat, Morocco, Katherine Buckley of South Hadley, MA, Jillian Downey of Charlestown, MA, John T. Downey and his fiancée Michelle of South Yarmouth and Dylan Downey also of South Yarmouth; her great granddaughter Amira Saunders of Rabat, Morocco.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way, Provincetown, on Friday, July 27th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, July 28th in St Peter the Apostle Church, Prince St, Provincetown. Burial will be in St Peters Cemetery, Saturday August 18th at 10:00am.
