Obituary

BARBARA (HARTSHORN) SILVA, age 83, died in Hingham, where she has resided since 1955, on Monday, April 26th after a brief illness. She was born in Boston and grew up in Gardner, MA where she attended public schools, graduating from Gardner High School in 1937. In high school she was active in a number of extra-curricular activities and particularly enjoyed her membership in the band in which she played the clarinet. After high school she attended Radcliffe College where she majored in psychology and from which she graduated with an AB in 1941. World War II intervened at this point and on October 6, 1942 she enlisted in the United States Navy from which she was honorably discharged on February 14, 1946. In her naval career she was a member of the first graduating class of WAVES, was commissioned an ensign and achieved the rank of lieutenant. She was stationed in Boston in the communications center that handled communications ashore and with ships at sea in the North Atlantic. Following her separation from the navy, she returned to school and attended the Harvard-Radcliffe Program in Business Administration. In 1948 she was employed as a division manager in one of the large Boston department stores and later as Registrar at Garland Junior College in Boston. During her years in Hingham, she was active in a number of causes, particularly the Hingham Visiting Nurse Association, and the activities of her church, the Second Parish in Hingham, including the Art Show, Street Fair, Christmas Bazaar, Newsletter Production and the Women's Sewing Group. She enjoyed a life-long love of choral and instrumental music and for years was member of the choir at Second Parish Church.She leaves her husband, Francis E. Silva, Jr. of Hingham, and was the mother of Ellen S. Barry and her husband Robert J. of Marshfield and the late Peter H. Silva. Grandmother of Alexandra Marie Barry and Michael Francis Barry both of Marshfield. Sister of Stanford H. Hartshorn of Gardner. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Sunday, May 16th at 3 PM at the Second Parish Church, 685 Main St.(Rt. 228), Hingham, MA 02043.Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Hingham Visiting Nurse Association, 40 North St., Hingham, MA 02043 or to the Second Parish Church.The interment in the High Street Cemetery, Hingham was private.
