Mr. Shirley “Lee” Boyd 80, of Medford died on Monday in Winchester Hospital following a brief illness. He is the husband of Phyllis (Bozzi) Boyd with whom he shared more than 55 years of marriage. Born in Crewe VA., son of the late Henry E. and Maude R. (Moore) Boyd, he attended local schools. As a young man he entered the U.S. Navy where he served on 2 different ships, The USS Cotton and the USS Warrington during the time of the Korean War.
Prior to his military service he worked for the N & W Railroad. He was there for several years before coming north settling with his family in Medford in 1956. He worked in the maintenance division as a mixer for the Continental Baking Company. Among other products, at one time he was producing favorite kids snacks such as Twinkies.
Lee was a “Jack of all trades” and was often called upon to lend a hand in fixing this, putting together that and figuring out how to make it work. He was fascinated by making things, repairing things and taking them apart. He will forever be remembered as the “family fixer” He never met an engine he couldn’t repair.
With all of these things, he never forgot his family. Nothing made him happier than spending quality time with his beloved wife and children.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son Paul Boyd, 2 daughters, Phyllis and Lorene Boyd all of Medford and is the father of the late Edward Boyd. Grandfather of Jenna, Matthew and Michael Boyd. Brother of James Boyd and his wife Patricia of VA. And the late Helen Bowen, Katherine Sorrels, Ruth Evans, Wallace and Frank Boyd. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. He will join his beloved dog, Marquis.
He was a quiet and demure man and will be sadly missed. At his request, visiting hours and services have been omitted. A service of remembrance will be held at a later date. It has been requested by Lee’s family that in lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be sent to the charity of your choice.
