
RICHARD WAYNE POMEROY, 90, of Hingham, a retired management consultant and a decorated Air Corps bombardier in World War II, died after a long struggle with dementia on July 17th, 2012. Mr. Pomeroy was born in Pittsfield and was graduated from Pittsfield High School and Columbia College where he sang with the Kings Men.
He served in the Army Air Corps, flying with the 8th Air Force out of England. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with 3 Oak Clusters. He flew 31 Missions in 65 days and was thought to have completed the fastest combat tour in the armed forces.
He worked as a management consultant for Arthur Young & Co. in New York and for Coopers & Lybrand in Boston before starting Pomeroy Associates, specializing in computer consulting. His professional life awards included the Distinguished Service Award from Systems and Procedures Association. He was a professional writer contributing articles to the Systems and Procedure Journal. He was also their feature editor. He taught at Bentley College in his later years.
Mr. Pomeroy was an avid sailor and raced in the Ensign and 210 classes out of the Hingham Yacht Club. He loved gardening and shared his roses and vegetables with family and friends. He was a member of the Eighty Air Force Historical Society, Mensa and the Hingham Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Wadsworth Pomeroy and his three daughters; Martha P. Ryan and her husband Jason of Hingham, Anne Pomeroy and her husband Peter Amato of Philadelphia, PA, Mary D. Hennessy and her husband Michael of Red Hook, NY and two stepsons; Charles W. Fish and Stewart M. Fish. Grandfather of Aiden and Emma Ryan and Connor and Laura Hennessy.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, July 28th at 11:30 AM at the Hingham United Church of Christ, 378 Main St., (Rt. 228), Hingham.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 480 Pleasant St., Watertown, MA 02462. The interment is private.
