George G. Stowell, 89, of New Bedford, died July 11, 2012 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Adelaide (Loftin) Stowell.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Daniel H. and Elsie (Borden) Stowell, he resided in New Bedford for most of his life.
Mr. Stowell had worked at J.C. Rhodes Eyelet Company in New Bedford for 48 years. Starting with the company as a machinist, he became Machine Shop foreman, then Machine and Maintenance Shop and Environmental Department foreman, and retired as Plant Engineer.
After graduating from New Bedford Vocational High School, Mr. Stowell served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Torpedo School in Newport, RI, and the Advanced Naval Torpedo School in San Diego, CA. He was a recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater medal, the American Area medal, the Philippine Liberation medal, the Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory medal.
Mr. Stowell was active in sports most of his life. He played football for New Bedford Vocational High School, and semiprofessional football for the New Bedford Whalers and the Dartmouth Hornets. He played basketball for St. James Parish and the U.S.S. Whitney; played softball for St. James Parish, Mattapoisett Town Team, J.C. Rhodes and the U.S.S. Whitney; and played ice hockey until he was 66 years old, playing for Gar Wood, New Bedford Whaler's mens team, Mattapoisett Town team, Gold Bond, Adam's Restaurant, King of Pizza, Silva's Package Store, Don Adam's Soda, McDonald's of New Bedford, and George Stowell's All-Stars.
Besides his wife, he was the beloved father of Gail A. Caine of New Bedford and Sharon L. Kennedy of Fairhaven; and brother of Leona M. Ashton of Dartmouth. He was also the beloved grandfather of Christopher M. Caine and Jennifer (Caine) Blatchford, and the beloved great-grandfather of Karalynn, Lucas, Hailey and Alex Blatchford. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Eleanor M. Pelletier, Howard A. Stowell and Ellsworth V. Stowell.
His Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 16th at 1 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. His family will receive visitors on Monday from 12 Noon - 1 PM, prior to the Service.
