Obituary

John J. Strangis, Sr., age 72, of New Bedford, died unexpectedly, Friday July 6, 2012. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late Armand and Rose L. (Coit) Strangis. John was a graduate of Brockton High School, class of 1958, and received his Associates degree from Massasoit Community College in 1977. He had been employed by Plymouth Rubber Company, Canton, MA and Eastern Mass Street Railway Company in Brockton as a mechanic. In 1966 he joined the Brockton Police Department and had been a Police Officer for nearly 25 years, retiring in 1989. He had been a longtime resident of Whitman, Sarasota, FL and most recently resided in New Bedford. John enjoyed spending time laughing and joking with family and friends, sports, music and was a fan of Elvis Presley.
He is survived by his children, John J. Strangis, Jr. and Lori J. Strangis both of Brockton, and Anthony P. Strangis of New York; two grandchildren Krystle M. Strangis and Riley Strangis; a sister Mary R. (Sargo) Canty of Lakeville, a brother Armand “Sonny” Strangis Jr. and his wife Geraldine of Whitman; his former wives Eleanor M. “Ellie” Strangis of Brockton and Patricia Strangis of Fairhaven and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ivy L. Bell, Beatrice M. (Bell) Fisher and Pearl L. Strangis.
Visiting Hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Thursday 4-7pm. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date in St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Donations in John’s name may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
