Obituary

Westport – Russell E. “Chief” Hicks, 79, husband of Irene G. (Perry) Hicks, of Westport, died at home Tuesday, May 4, 2004 after a brief illness with his family by his side.

He was born in San Francisco, California, son of the late Herbert A. and Elsie V. (Burrows) Hicks, and had resided in Westport for the past 48 years. Mr. Hicks was a 30 year veteran of the United States Navy, serving in WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He served on the U.S.S. California during Pearl Harbor, the U.S.S. Yorktown during Midway, the U.S.S. St. Lo during Leyte Gulf before finishing his distinguished career at Quonset Point in 1971. While serving his country he received the Purple Heart.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by 3 sons: Kelly Hicks of Westport, Raymond Dupras of Westport and Thomas Miller of Attleboro; 2 daughters: Sharon DeMello of New Bedford and Diane McConnell of Westport; a sister: Doreen Sullivan of Dixon, CA; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Barbara Lions.

Funeral services will be private.
