Frederick R. Prisco, Jr., 77, of Manahawkin, NJ, passed into the loving care of God at home on Friday, June 29, 2012, after a battle with cancer.
Fred was born in Jersey City, NJ, on May 2, 1935 to Fred and Mary (Sottosanti) Prisco and spent his early years growing up with his brother Anthony in West New York, NJ. A graduate of Memorial High School in West New York, Fred remained connected with his classmates through the years by helping organize class reunions.
Fred faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1969 as a captain in military intelligence.
As a young man, Fred was united in marriage to Barbara DiVeto and blessed with son Richard. On April 30, 1966, Fred was united in marriage to Joan Saglimbene and further blessed with two more sons, Fred and Philip. They made their home in North Bergen, NJ, until 1972 when they moved to Ringwood, NJ, where they resided until moving to Manahawkin, NJ, in 1996.
Education was a very important part of Fred’s life. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Peter’s College, a master’s from Montclair State University, and a doctorate from Rutgers University. A teacher at many levels, he spent most of his career working at Bergen Community College. He helped get the college up and running as Director of Admissions in 1967, and then transitioned back to teaching, retiring as a respected computer science professor in 2002. In recognition of his many years of distinguished service, Fred was honored by BCC with Professor Emeritus status in 2004.
Even in retirement, Fred’s desire to learn never waned. Until he became too ill to continue, he often donated his time designing, programming, and maintaining websites for the various organizations with which he was involved.
Fred was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Barnegat and Manahawkin, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of the local Elks and Moose Lodges. He was a volunteer with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Juvenile Conference Committee. Fred had an outgoing personality and enjoyed engaging life right up until the end.
