TEWKSBURY - Edward F. DelTorto Jr., age 69, a lifelong resident of Tewksbury, died Monday morning, June 18, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill, following a courageous battle with cancer. For the past 15 years he was the companion of Helen G. Defina, with whom he had resided in Tewksbury.
He was born in Lowell, November 9, 1942, the son of Edward and Marie (Houlihan) DelTorto. He was raised in Tewksbury and graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School in 1960.
He worked as a truck driver throughout his career, for Boston Local 25, Lowell Local 49, but mainly Manchester, NH, Teamsters Local 633, AFL-CIO.
He was intrigued by American Indian culture, and was a participant of many New England Pow-Wows. In his later years, he was "adopted" by a Souix Indian mother, Althea Dutson, of Rosebud, S. Dakota.
Besides his beloved Helen, he is survived by four children, Gina deBettencourt and her husband Allan of Oak Bluffs, MV, Dominic "Nicky" DelTorto and his wife Laurie of CT, Dianna DelTorto and Angela DelTorto, both of Edgartown, MV; eight grandchildren, Alan "A.J." Jr., Antone "Tony", Devin, Kendra, Zachary, Tyler, Anthony, and Gino.
His Memorial Service was held, Monday, June 25, in the Funeral Home. Memorials to the Winchester Hospital, Cancer Center, c/o Foundation Office, 611 Main St., Winchester, MA 01890-9944 or visit winchesterhospital.org, will be appreciated.
