Obituary

DR. NORMAN T. BUDDE, 81, of Hingham, died of a heart attack on June 6th at Tufts Medical Center, Boston. Dr. Budde was born as an American citizen in Hamburg, Germany in 1930. After living in Germany throughout the war, he came to the U.S. in 1946. A graduate of NYU ('52) and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine ('57), he practiced pediatric dentistry in Hingham and served as Senior Associate in Pediatric Dentistry at the Boston Children's Hospital, where he was Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatric Dentistry. He was an active member of the Episcopal Church and served as co-chair of the Commission on Pastoral Outreach for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. While a student in Cambridge, Dr. Budde taught sailing at the Hingham Yacht Club, leading to a long and active membership in the club. He was a long-standing member at the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, leading courses in topics such as historic methods of maritime navigation.

He is survived by his wife Townley; sister Nina Scott of Amherst, MA; sons, J. Thomas of The Woodlands, Texas, Daniel of Milton, MA, James of Lakewood, CO and Benjamin of Tokyo, Japan; stepchildren Emily Cookson of Mill Valley, CA, Sarah Girard of Blackstone, MA and J. Borden Freeman of Cohasset, MA; and eight grandchildren. His first wife Dana, passed away in 1987.

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Friday, June 15th at 2 PM at The Church of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to The Trustees of Reservations, 227 East St., Hingham, MA 02043 in the memory of Norman T. Budde.
