No. TEWKSBURY - Elias A. "Bud" Cooney, a well known and lifelong resident of Tewksbury, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, June 3, at Saints Medical Center in Lowell. He was the beloved husband of Audrey L. (Kelley) Cooney, with whom he would have celebrated a 48th wedding anniversary on June 6th.
He was born in North Tewksbury on the Cooney Farm , Christmas Eve, 1935, a son of John J. and Mary (Mealey) Cooney. He had lived his entire life in town, graduated from Keith Academy in Lowell, and earned both his Baccalaurete and Masters Degrees in civil engineering from Northeasten University. He served in the U.S Army Reserves.
He retired as Sr. Vice President and Treasurer at Whitman @ Howard in Wellesley, an architectural and engineering company specializing in municipal water and wastewater treatment plants. He was the lead engineer for his company during the construction of Lowell's water filtration plant in the 1960's. "Bud" was respected by his peers, and served as Past President and Past Treasurer for the New England Water Works Association (NEWWA), as well as International Director for the American Water Works Association (AWWA). He was awarded the George Warren Fuller Award in 1999, and the Award of Merit in 1986. He also served on numerous committees during his 43 years association with both NEWWA and AWWA, including, Executive, Program, Budget, Long Range Planning, Award of Merit, George Warren Fuller Selection, Public Relation, AWWA Awards, and Fund Raising.
"Bud" and his wife Audrey were active in Lowell's R.A.R.A., where he recently retired after 25 years of service as Treasurer of the group. He also assisted in accounting matters at the Tewksbury Senior Center for several groups and the Director. He enjoyed weekend activities with his son, was an avid golfer and former member of Vesper Country Club in Lowell, and was a N.A.S.C.A.R. racing fan.
Besides his beloved wife Audrey, he is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, John A. Cooney of Tewksbury, and Paul E. Cooney, Esq., and his wife Andrea Snowden, Esq., both of Lincoln, NE; eight grandchildren, Caitlin, Brighid, Ryan "Mack," Elias, Mia, Ella, John, and Anna, all of Lincoln, NE; and several nieces and nephews, including his neighbors, Daniel and Sharon (Callahan) Cooney and their children Jeffrey and Michael all of Tewksbury.
He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Claire Cooney, Daniel and Rita Cooney; and sister M. Virginia Cooney.
Visiting hours Thursday, June 7, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. His funeral will begin Friday, June 8, at 9:45 from the funeral home, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in St. Robert Bellarmine Church, 198 Haggets Pond Rd., Andover. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, No. Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, memorials to R.A.R.A. 295 High St., Lowell, MA 01852, will be appreciated.
