Arthur J. McCarthy D.V.M., 94, formerly of Natick, passed away peacefully May 27, 2012 at the Big Bend Hospice in Tallahassee, FL.
Arthur was born in Boston on July 2, 1917. He graduated from Framingham High School in 1936. Arthur was a graduate of Middlesex University Veterinary School (now Brandeis) in 1942 where he received his doctor of veterinary medicine degree. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army during WWII as a Veterinary Technician in the China Burma Theatre from 1944 to 1946.
In 1946 after the war he started his veterinary practice in Framingham. In 1954 Arthur built Brookside Animal Hospital in Natick, which he operated until his retirement in 1983. In his retirement, he enjoyed following all the Boston sports teams especially the Patriots and the Red Sox. Arthur and Priscilla split their retirement years between Cape Cod, Flagler Beach and Tallahassee, Florida.
Arthur was the beloved husband of 64 years to D. Priscilla Goodnow McCarthy of Tallahassee, FL; father of Arthur J. McCarthy, Jr. and his wife Charlene Anne (Connolly) of Tallahassee FL and Gary E. McCarthy and his wife Susan (Chaisson) of Upton, MA; and brother-in-law of Patricia Goodnow Thomas, Roy Thomas of GA, and Hilda Goodnow of Boscawen, NH. He is also survived by his grandchildren Christa McCarthy, A.J. McCarthy, III, Kevin McCarthy and Matthew McCarthy along with a great grandchild Ella Cray.
The McCarthy family will receive visitors in the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park St. (at Natick Common) Natick, MA on Thursday, May 31, 2012 from 4-7 PM. With a Service of Remembrance on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. Burial will be at the MA National Cemetery in Bourne, MA on Friday at 2:00 PM.
