Obituary

Atty. Joseph R. “Joe” Buttner, age 88 of Brockton formerly of Scituate and Quincy died Wednesday May 23, 2012 surrounded by his family and friends. Husband of the late Mary P. (Camia) Buttner. Born and raised in Dorchester, he was the son of the late William and Rebecca (Gormley) Buttner. A graduate of Boston Latin High School, Joe’s College education was interrupted by WW II. He served in the US Navy as an officer in the Pacific Theatre. After the war Joe completed his education at Notre Dame University, Tufts and received his law degree from Boston College in 1950. He remained in the Naval Reserve and retired as a commander.

Several decades of Joe’s law career were spent in the law office of Bernard Cohen. He was a leading workman’s compensation attorney in Massachusetts. He had been active in the State House helping to enact legislative change in workman’s compensation laws. His years of service in the State House included working with the Speaker of the House, Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor. In his retirement Joe worked part time with the Juvenile Court System in Boston.

Joe enjoyed time spent with his family at his summer home on Cape Cod. He was an avid boater and enjoyed fishing with family and friends on his beloved boat “Gus-Gus”. He was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, American Legion and the Democratic Party.

He was the loving and devoted father of Trisha Cadman and her husband Al of Hanson, Janet Hutchins and her husband Edward of Easton, Jacquelyn Bessette and her husband Peter of Whitman, Joseph Buttner and his wife Denise of Norton, Steven Buttner and his wife Joanne of Lakeville and Michele Bergeron and her husband John of Norton; grandfather of Matthew Cadman & Alisha Hopkins, Heidi McStowe and Kyle Hutchins, Peter and Nicholas Bessette, Zachary and Leah Buttner, Madisen and Maxwell Buttner and Jacob and Gabrielle Bergeron; also leaves 6 great grandchildren, two brothers William Buttner of Salem and John Buttner of Stoughton and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton, Monday 4-8pm. Funeral Service in the funeral home on Tuesday at 10:30am. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 12:30pm.
