Armando J. Gomes, 79, of New Bedford died Thursday May 17, 2012 suddenly at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Mariana (DaGraca) Gomes.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, the son of the late Jose and Eugenia (Lobo) Gomes, he lived in New Bedford for many years.
Mr. Gomes was formerly employed as a merchant seaman for the Exxon Corporation. He had also worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and Chamberlain Manufacturing Company.
He enjoyed gardening, listening to Crioulo music, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife; eight children, Mary Nolan, Laura Valles, Elizabeth Magnett, and Anna Rodriguez, all of New Bedford, Armando Gomes, Jr. of Providence, RI, Adam Gomes of Fall River, Paul Gomes of Tulsa, OK, and Armando Gomes of North Attleboro; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and many cousins.
He was the brother of the late Elmira Gomes.
His Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 10:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday from 2-6 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
