Anita J. (Leavis) McCarthy, 71, of Salem, NH died Tuesday, May 15th at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH.
Anita grew up in Somerville, MA, graduating from St. Clement’s High School. She received her RN degree from St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing. She began her career at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Boston, later working with her husband in his surgical practice.
Anita was an avid reader and she enjoyed gardening, traveling and art museums. She loved musical theatre and was a WW II history buff. Anita was a volunteer at Salemhaven Nursing Home.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Richard McCarthy and her parents Suzanne (Mace) and Allyn Leavis.
She is survived by her 4 children: Richard McCarthy, II and wife Cathleen of Milton, MA; Matthew McCarthy and wife Jean of Waukesha, WI; Justin McCarthy and wife Sarah of Bedford, NH and Christine McCarthy of Salem, NH; sisters: Edith Bookstein of Seattle, WA, Suzanne Bachellor of Florida, Ellen Harland of Littleton, MA and Virginia Post of Somerville, MA, brother John Leavis of Alabama; 8 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Sunday, May 20th from 4-7 PM at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St., Salem, NH.
The Funeral Mass will be Monday at 10:30 AM at St. Matthew Parish in Windham. Burial is in Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem, NH.
