Guy C. Martorana died peacefully at Wilmington Health Care, following an extended illness.The beloved husband of Guadalupe “Lupe”, he was eighty years old.
A lifelong Medford resident, he was the son of the late Isabella (Vecchia) and Michaelangelo Martorana. Guy was a 1951 graduate of Medford High School where he was a standout athlete. He went on to attend Louisiana State University (LSU) where he played football, later transferring to Mexico City College where he met the love of his life. They married and most recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Guy worked for the former Record American, now known as the Boston Herald, for many years and was a member of the Boston Garden “Bull Gang” that changed over the hockey ice to the basketball court. An outstanding athlete himself, he was dedicated to youth development through sports. He was the former President and a coach of the Medford Pop Warner program for over forty years. He also coached the North Medford Little League Redskins along with various other team sports. In 1992,Guy was inducted into the Medford High School Mustang Hall of Fame and was later joined by three of his sons.In his younger years he enjoyed coaching his children, attending their baseball and football games and he especially enjoyed his daughter's basketball games. Guy liked conversation and would talk to everybody and anybody. In his later years he and Guadalupe traveled, visiting Hawaii and cruising the Caribbean. They spent many hours watching movies and often watched as many as three a day. As Guyput it many times, he had a fulfilling life and did things "my way."
Guy is survived by his wife Guadalupe, his daughter Michelle Berluti and her husband Robert of Westwood, his sons Guy R. Martorana and his wife Judy of Alabama, Allan K. Martorana and his wife Anne Marie of Medford, Craig S. Martorana of Everett, Roger P. Martorana and his wife Nina of Arlington, David M. Martorana and his wife Jocelyn of Florida and James E. Martorana and his wife Suzanne of New Hampshire. He also leaves 16 loving Grandchildren. He was the brother of Josephine Luongo and her husband John; Anna Martorana and Frank Martorana, all of Saugus; Michael Martorana of Malden and Albert Martorana of Reading; and also leaves several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St. Medford, on Tuesday, May 15, at 9 AM, followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Fellsway West, Medford, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting Hours at the funeral home are on Monday May 14, from 4 through 8 PM. Interment will be private.
