GARDNER-Walter A. Matthews, 85, of Gardner, formerly of Worcester died Thursday, May 10th in St. Vincent Hospital. He is survived by his two brothers, Hector J. Matthews, Jr. of Leominster and Arthur J. Matthews of Worcester; two sisters, Mary E. Grabowski of Worcester and Claire M. Shimek and her husband, Andrew of Leominster and several nephews and nieces. His sister, Theresa A, Pontremuli predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Hector J. and Sadie (Conlin) Matthews. Mr. Matthews had at one time been employed by the Polar Corporation and later worked as a laborer for several Worcester area companies, retiring due to disability in 1972. He was a member of the Highlander Adult Day Program in Fitchburg. Mr. Matthews enjoyed the company of family and friends and was an avid Red Sox fan.
Funeral arrangements under the direction of O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue will be private.
