Martin L. Murphy “Marty Senior”, departed on his final journey at the age of 87, surrounded by his family. A life-long Medford resident, Senior was the son of the late Edward and Mary (Vickers) Murphy.
Senior was the second generation of what has become four generations of a family involved in the hospitality industry and he was the original founder of Marty’s Catering of Medford and a senior advisor to Montvale Plaza. Senior donated a great deal of his time and services to various organizations in the Medford area and has instilled in his family a sense of volunteerism and charity for others. The four great loves of his life were his family, the sea, sports and traveling. The philosophy, which he preached and followed, was that you should live life to the fullest every day.
As a member of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club, he enjoyed spending his time with the “Over the Hill Gang”, boating, fishing, swapping fishing stories with his buddies or telling tales of how he and General McArthur together won World War II in the Pacific.
He was a life-long supporter of all the Boston sports teams and could be found cheering on the teams at the local stadiums or on the road at various sites throughout the United States. He was also an avid fan of thoroughbred racehorses and spent many hours both as a horse owner, handicapper and spectator.
Martin’s travels took him to the Pacific during World War II and later in life he enjoyed taking cruises with Roselle or traveling with friends and other family members. He established a tradition of bringing each of his children and grandchildren on his annual trip to Las Vegas where he would provide a personalized historic tour of the city.
A disabled veteran, he was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 45, VFW Post 1012. He was also an active member of the Irish American Club of Malden, the Kiwanis Club, The Pleasant Park Yacht Club, The Medford Elks, and the Knights of Columbus.
The beloved husband of the late Roselle (Green), He was a devoted father to Martin L. Murphy, Jr. and his wife Mary of Medford, Stephen Murphy and his wife Raffaela of Florida, and the late Diane Cabral. He was a dear father-in-law of Philip Cabral of Dedham and a loving grandfather to Kimberly, Mark and his wife Nicole, Jacqueline, Stacey, Stephanie, Eric and Ryan Murphy and Douglas and his wife Noreen and Gregory Cabral and his wife Erin. The loving great-grandfather of Christopher and Karianna Cabral, Martin was the brother of Miriam O’Brien of NH, Margaret Keating of Arlington, the late Edward Murphy, Rita Sparks and Leona Woods.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to visit with the family at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Thursday from 3 through 8 PM and again on Friday, April 27th at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church 118 High St. Medford at 10 AM. Service will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
