Gertrude Teresa (Brennan) Mello, 75, of New Bedford passed away Friday April 20, 2012 after a lengthy illness in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of James A. Mello; they would have been married for 55 years.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Martin J. and Vivian (Kaszynski) Brennan, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, where she was a member of the Women's Guild.
Mrs. Mello was formerly employed at several women's retail clothing shops over the years and had been a receptionist for Dr. William Walsh.
A devoted grandmother, Gert loved spending time and shopping with her grandchildren. She enjoyed going out in the sun, taking walks, and visiting Fort Phoenix, her favorite place. She was always willing to help others.
Her family would like to thank Community Nurse and Hospice Care, Coastline Elderly Services, and Dr. Ahmet Dirican and associates for their excellent care, and for family and friends who kept in touch and offered support during her illness.
Survivors include her husband; her children, Susan (Mello) Gallup and her husband David of Seekonk, Brian Mello of Las Vegas, NV, and Sharon (Mello) Young of New Bedford; her grandchildren, Taylor, Jeremy, and Bridget Young, Hannah and Matthew Gallup, and Allison Mello; two brothers-in-law, John Mello and Thomas Mello and his wife Kathy; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was the sister of the late Beatrice Brennan, who passed away in March, and sister-in-law of the late Dolores Mello.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9 AM at St. Mary's Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.
