TAUNTON – Joseph Mendes, husband of the late Theresa (Demers) Mendes, died at Marian Manor in Taunton on April 15, 2012.
Formerly of Raynham, he was 82 years old.
Born, raised and educated in Taunton, Mr. Mendes was the son of the late Frank and Joaquina M. (Santos) Mendes.
Employed by Trucchi’s Supermarkets as a deli manager for many years, he retired 1994.
Serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Mendes later worked for Western Auto for over twenty-two years, and subsequently, the former Fernandes Supermarkets.
He was a communicant of Holy Family Church and member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
He was also a member of the Young Men’s Social Club.
Mr. Mendes enjoyed duckpin bowling, and was awarded many trophies for his skills. He also coached Junior Duckpin Bowling.
A sports enthusiast and an avid Boston sports team fan, he enjoyed playing softball and baseball, and coached in local Little League and Babe Ruth Leagues.
Mr. Mendes also enjoyed fishing and playing cards.
His favorite pastime was spending time with his family.
Survivors include a son, Joseph D. Mendes and his wife Marguerite of Taunton; three daughters, Ann M. Mendes and her companion Capt. Michael J. Silvia of E. Taunton, Linda J. Mendes of Dighton, and Pamela J. Johnson and her husband Christopher of E. Taunton; four brothers, Frank, Robert, Charles, and Richard Mendes, all of Taunton; two sisters, Jacqueline Charlwood and Joanne Nolette both of Taunton; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late William Mendes.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Taunton on Thursday April 19th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at Holy Family Church, E. Taunton at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 18th, from 5 to 8 p.m.
