WORCESTER-Carmella A. (Bertone) Swearingen, 86 of 1350 Main Street, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, died Friday, April 16th in Clark Manor Nursing Home. Her beloved husband Samuel A. Swearingen died in 1969. She leaves 2 sons Samuel and his wife Elaine Swearingen and Paul Swearingen both of Alexandria, VA, 2 daughters Nancy wife of John Sullivan of N. Easton and Mary wife of the late Robert Babbidge of Worcester, 4 grandchildren Lisa Jano, Robert Babbidge, Samuel and Michael Swearingen, 5 great grandchildren, and many relatives and friends. 2 sisters Mary Battelle and Vera Lucivero predeceased her.
She was born in Worcester the daughter of Pasquale F. and Nancy M. (D’Elia) Bertone and graduated from the Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of its alumna association. Mrs. Swearingen worked as a registered nurse serving as Supervisor of Nurses at Worcester City Hospital for 25 years until retiring in 1972. She was an active member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church and its Women’s Guild, a member and an officer of the Worcester Diocesan Council of Catholic Nurses, a board member of the former Worcester Association for Retarded Children, and as past president and a member of the AARP, Worcester Bancroft Chapter. In loving memory of her husband Samuel, she was a life member of the DAV Auxillary and was a member of its Gold Star Wives and Commanders Club.
The funeral is Monday, April 19th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 5 Spaulding Street. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Sunday, April 18th from 2:00 until 5:00 PM in the funeral home.
