WESTON: J. Ward Carter, 90, died on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at the Newton Wellesley Hospital following a period of declining health.
He was born in Glen Ellen, Illinois on August 9, 1921 the son of the late John C. Carter and Anna J. (Carr) Carter.
Ward was the husband for over 60 years of Connie A. (Kruger) Carter of Weston. Father of Chrystalynn and her partner Paul Crosson of Erie, CO and the late Dana W. Carter who died in 1978. Brother of Mary Alice Avato of Southwick. Brother-in-law of Barbara Peterson of GA. Uncle of Berry Bate of NC, Bruce Bate and his wife Carol of GA and Glen Karl Peterson and his wife Kelly Rappuchi of SC.
Ward spent his formative years in Belmont and moved to Weston in 1949 where he has resided until his death. He was a graduate of Belmont High School and received his BA from Harvard University and his MBA from Harvard Business School. He served his country proudly during World Ward II as a Lieutenant with the United States Navy. He had a long and active career of 52 years with the Town of Weston. He began as the Secretary to the Board of Selectman concurrently serving as the Town Accountant and he retired as the Town Administrator.
He was the Past President of the Massachusetts Manager Association, a member of the American Political Science Association and one of the longest members of the Weston Rotary Club since 1959 and also served in many capacities as well as a Past President. Ward was an active member of the Congregational Church of Weston for 50 years and served on various church boards and as the Treasurer.
He and his wife Connie enjoyed traveling and he was most fond of visiting National Parks throughout the country.
Ward will be remembered for being a warm and kind gentleman and as the epitomy of a public servant and dedicated to serving the community of Weston.
At the request of his family there will be no funeral home visitations and private family interment will be held in the Carter family lot in Linwood Cemetery in Weston.
A Memorial Service celebrating Ward’s life will be held on Friday, April 20, 2012 at 1:30 pm at the Congregational Church of Weston, 130 Newton St, Weston with the Rev. Dr. Philip J. Mayher officiating.
A reception will follow at the Weston Town Hall, 11 Town House Road, Weston.
