Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Harold P. “Mac” MacArthur, Jr., 72, died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital surrounded by his devoted family. He was the husband of Marion F. (Campbell) MacArthur.
Born in Gloucester on December 31, 1939, he was the son of the late Harold P. and Arlene (Goulart) MacArthur. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and attended Gloucester public schools.
Mac was employed by the City of Gloucester for twenty-seven years in the Gloucester public school maintenance department. Not known for working just one job, Mac labored hard his entire life. He had also worked for Corliss Brothers, Anadama Bread Company, Hodge’s Gas Station and the Liquor Locker, just to name a few.
He and Marion made their home on Whittemore Street, where he could often be seen sitting in his rocking chair watching daily events out his front window. Always placing his family first, Mac’s incredible work ethic, amazing loyalty and honesty were among his greatest gifts. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife of fifty years, he is survived by two sons, Harold P., III, husband of Elena (Carter) MacArthur, Brian MacArthur, companion of Shannon Young; three daughters, Karen, wife of Timothy Marchant, Janet, wife of William Merrell and Susan, wife of Joseph Taormina; twelve grandchildren, Heather and Phillip MacArthur, Eric, Ethan and Elliot MacArthur, Faye and Nichole Marchant,William, III, Julie and Robyn Merrell, and Melissa and Matthew Taormina; a sister, Laura Silva; two brothers, John, husband of Muriel MacArthur and Douglas, husband of Sharon MacArthur and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his sister and her husband, Helen and John McCarthy.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 5 p.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 2 – 5 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Gloucester Firefighter Michael Smith, c/o the MacArthur Family, 21 Whittemore St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
