Eldon F. Morrill, a lifelong resident of Stoughton and United States Army Veteran of WWII, passed away in Stoughton on Monday April 9, 2012. He was 89 years old and the beloved husband of the late Mildred E. (Lewis) Morrill who passed away on January 25, 2012.
Born March 1, 1923 in Stoughton,Massachusetts, Eldon was a son to the late Frederick and Lulu (Lyle) Morrill. “MOE” as he was affectionately known, attended Stoughton Public Schools and was a 1942’ graduate of Stoughton High School. Following graduation he entered the military, serving in the united States Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a Ball Turret Gunner in the 15th Air Force, with the 451st Bombardment group. While based in Italy, he participated in the European-African- Middle Eastern Campaign. His combat missions included flying over 35 sorties with the B24 Liberator group. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant as well as achieving various awards, decorations and campaign medals. Sgt. Morrill was also the proud recipient of a Certificate Of Valor in recognition of his courageous military service in aerial combat.
Prior to his deployment overseas in 1943, Eldon married his high school sweetheart Millie Lewis.After his return home from the war in 1945, they established their lifelong home in Stoughton, where they raised their family.Eldon worked the automotive industry and was employed by Consolidated Peterbilt in Foxboro,MA. He was also employed by the Stoughton Fire Department as a Radio Dispatcher.
His interests included wildlife, sports, ham radio and especially aviation. Eldon held a private pilots license and enjoyed flying out of Wiggins Airport in Norwood,MA. He was also a member of The First United Methodist Church in Stoughton. He was a devoted husband, father and will be fondly remembered and missed greatly.
Mr. Morrill is survived by his loving children, Carol A. McEachron of Buzzards Bay, Eldon F. Morrill Jr. and his wife Kristin of Mendon, Linda Gail Bindbeutel and her husband Henry of West Paris, Maine and Janiece A. Bruce and her husband Gene of Stoughton. Other survivors include his sister, Audrey E. (Morrill) Campbell of Bridgewater, his 9 grandchildren and his 6 great-grandchildren. He was also a brother in law to Eleanor Gaibl of Stoughton, Elaine Davis of East Bridgewater and Helen Lewis also of Stoughton. Eldon was also a brother to the late Frederick Morrill, Wendell Morrill and Lyle Morrill.
His funeral service will be held Friday April 13, 2012 at 12pm from the Sheehan, Lowe & Powers Funeral Home, 115 Monk Street, Stoughton. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Stoughton. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
