CHICOPEE – Edward “Monty” Montemagni, 91, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Monday, April 9, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life at Kindred Hospital Park View in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Holyoke on December 30, 1920, a beloved son of the late Angelo and Colomba (Remedi) Montemagni. At a young age, he moved to Chicopee and was a lifelong resident of the city. Monty was well known in the Chicopee area and established several businesses including Monty’s Toys, Monty’s Furniture and Baystate Rug Company, all in Chicopee. In 2010, his business, Baystate Rug, in the Aldenville section of Chicopee, was named the National Flooring Dealership of the United States and Canada by Mohawk. He was a good businessman who cherished all of his loyal customers over the many years he was in business. He was an avid Yankees fan and was always ready to cheer for his favorite player, Joe DiMaggio. Monty loved his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. During his leisure time, he enjoyed many vacations with his beloved wife and family. He leaves: his devoted wife and best friend of over 67 years, Margaret C. (McLaughlin) Montemagni; his loving children, Joseph “Joe” Montemagni and his wife, Liz, of Chicopee, Mark Montemagni and his wife, Laura, of Pittsfield, and Karen Romano of South Hadley; his 13 cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Meghan, Marissa, Mikaela, Madelina and Joseph Montemagni, Sara, Christopher, Molly, Jake and his wife, Jennifer, Maggie and Casey Montemagni, and John and Rachel Romano; his two cherished great-grandchildren, Belle Montemagni and Madison Romano; his dear brother, Dolf Montemagni of Chicopee; his dear sister, Jeanie Barker of South Hadley; his dear sister-in-law, Mary Montemagni of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brother, James Montemagni; and his dear sisters, Madeline “Nana” Lombardi and Carma Hough. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, April 16, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial will be private at the convenience of his family. His family will receive friends at the funeral home in the Rose Chapel on Sunday, April 15, 2012 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
