Rita F. (McDonald) Hollins, 83, of Westport, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 7, 2012 at home surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Harold E. “Pat” Hollins.
Born and raised in Fall River, daughter of the late Andrew J. and Margaret (Carberry) McDonald, she relocated with her family to Westport in 1962. She has always enjoyed living by the Westport River and often referred to it as “her little corner of the world.” Mrs. Hollins was a Class of 1946 graduate from Durfee High School. In her early career, she was a homemaker and worked for Modern Furniture and the former Bay Sheet Metal as a bookkeeper. Later in life she worked as a bank teller at NBIS/Fleet Bank in New Bedford until her retirement. She was a member of the Westport Point United Methodist Church. A long time member of the Westport Yacht Club, she once served as a club officer. She also volunteered many hours at the Westport River Watershed Alliance. Mrs. Hollins enjoyed cooking, boating, fishing, bowling, snowmobiling, Mah Jong, walking her many dogs, but most of all she loved spending time with her family. She will most be remembered for her genuine nature, her upbeat, charismatic personality and her infectious laugh.
Survivors include a son: Robert M. Hollins of Westport; a son-in-law: Gerald J. Swift of Sandwich, MA; a sister: Mary Smith of Somerset; 3 grandchildren: Karen E. Swift, Laura M. Swift and Heather E. Hollins; 2 great grandchildren: Kyle A. Swift and Ryan P. Cook.
She was mother of the late Nancy M. Swift and sister of the late: Margaret Mitchell and Andrew McDonald.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Monday, April 9, 2012 at the Potter Funeral Home at 11:00 A.M.
Visitation will be Monday 9 – 11 A.M. prior to the funeral.
Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
