ACUSHNET — Joel Murray Delano, age 70 years, of Acushnet, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, after an extended illness. He was the husband of Sheila Beard Delano.
A resident of Dartmouth for most of his life, he was a graduate of Dartmouth High School and served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Conflict.
Joel served on the Dartmouth Planning Board, coached in the Dartmouth Youth Athletic Association when his sons were growing up.
A construction worker by trade he could be found many days preparing the athletic fields for sporting events.
A longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church, he was employed for a time at Building #19.
The son of the late Ferdinand Delano and Ruth Murray Edmunds, he is survived by his wife Sheila, his sons Joel and Thomas, his grandchildren Cody, Jacob and Hannah, his sisters Joni (Edward) Pierce, Elinor (Gary) Alfonso, his brother Mark (Terrie) Delano and his Father-in-law Clarence Beard all of Florida and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was the brother of the late Thomas Delano and Evelyn Hathaway, step son of the late Irene Delano and son-in-law of the late Florida Beard.
At his request, his services were private under the direction of the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford.
