Epifanio E. "Eppie" Costa, 82, of Dartmouth formerly of New Bedford died Friday April 9, 2004 at Brandon Woods after a long illness.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Edward M. and Maria (Oliveira) Costa, he was raised in Port Chester, New York, later returning to New Bedford where he lived for most of his life.
Mr. Costa was formerly employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as a shipper-receiver until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement, he worked delivering meals on wheels.
He was a founding member of the Bid Whist Club. He loved Cape Verdean dancing. In his youth, he pitched on many Cape Verdean baseball teams.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and participated in the Battle of Northern France. He was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star.
Survivors include a son, Edward E. "Buster" Costa of New Bedford; two daughters, Doreen Sylvia and her husband Donald of New Bedford, and Brenda Summers of Falmouth; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Antonio J. Oliveira and Manuel E. Costa, Sr.
His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday April 14, 2004 at 10 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday April 13, 2004 from 5-8 PM.
