Obituary

SILVER SPRING, MD — Winifred L. Carpenter, 90, formerly of Fairhaven, passed away in her sleep on March 11, 2012, in Silver Spring, MD. She persevered determinedly for many years in the face of multiple health problems. She and her husband, Richard H. Carpenter, relocated to Silver Spring in 2005 to be closer to family.

Winifred was born on September 18, 1921, in Boston, Mass. to Henry S. and Florence M. Anderson. She was raised in Malden, Mass. and became a registered nurse after studying at the New England Deaconess Hospital. She was employed by the Joslin Clinic and as a public health nurse.

In Fairhaven, she was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church. She was an avid Boston Bruins fan who enjoyed her summer vacations in Brewster on Cape Cod.

She leaves her husband of 68 years, Richard Carpenter, retired President of the Fairhaven Savings Bank; daughters, Margaret Carpenter and Patricia Spencer (Bill); and son, David Carpenter (Courtney). She also leaves 5 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents and 3 sisters, including her dear sister, Jean, who died in December at the age of 92.
