Mr. George Greene Child, of East Taunton, died Thursday, March 15 in Morton Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Emily (DeBrum) Child. He was born 83 years ago in Swansea, the son of the late Frederick V. and Ethel (Peters) Child. He was educated in Barrington, R.I., having graduated from St. Andrew’s School, and had been an East Taunton resident for the past 58 years. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the Harodite Finishing Company in North Dighton for 36 years. He was also employed at the Raynham-Taunton Dog Track for several years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served aboard several destroyers, including the USS Borie (DD704) and the USS Sperry (DD697), during World War II. Hen enjoyed gardening, carpentry, country and western music and dancing.
In addition to his wife, he leaves: 4 sons: George Child and his wife, Carolyn of Taunton, Eugene Child of Taunton, Steven Child of N.Woodstock, N.H., and Glenn Child and his wife, Melanie of Bethlehem, N.H.; 2 daughters: Beverly Simas and her husband, Charles of Wareham, and Donna Child of Taunton; 2 stepsons: Thomas Swisher and his wife, Debbie of Dighton, and James Swisher and his wife, Cindy of Taunton; 1 stepdaughter: Adrian Barboza of Berkley; 1 sister: Emily Hartley of Bristol, R.I.; 30 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson, and several nieces and nephews. George was also the brother of the late Charles and Frederick Child.
A Funeral Service to which relatives and friends are invited will be held at the Christ Community Church, Stevens Street, East Taunton, on Monday, March 19 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Cedar Knoll Cemetery. Visiting Hours are respectfully omitted. Arrangements are under the direction of The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home of Taunton.
