R. Dorothy “Dot” Campione, 87, long time resident of North Andover, passed away peacefully at Prescott House in North Andover on March 11, 2012. She was the wife of the late Joseph Campione.
Dorothy was born on September 24, 1924 in Lawrence, Ma. She was educated in Lawrence and was a graduate of Lawrence High School class of 1942. She also attended Bryant & Stratton College in Boston. She worked for the Lawrence Credit Union for many years until working with her husband, who was the pharmacist of Elite Pharmacy, their family business. Upon his passing, Dorothy converted Elite Pharmacy to Joe’s Variety store, located on the corner of Middlesex Street and Waverly Road in North Andover. Joe’s store was a high point of many a child’s day when they would stop in for a soda, candy bar, and a smiling face after school. She sold the store in 1981, but the store’s name has never been changed. She spent much of her retired life being with her five grandchildren that she loved dearly.
Dorothy was an avid Red Sox fan, having season tickets for many years. She was the #1 fan of Carl Yastrzemski. She was an active member of St. Michael’s Parish in North Andover as well as the North Andover Senior Citizen center, where she played bingo, travelled on day trips and participated in Senior Bowling at Academy Lanes in Bradford, Ma. For many years she enjoyed breakfast every morning at Burger King. The friendly staff there made her feel at home. It was very special to her and something she spoke about often.
Dorothy moved to Prescott House in February 2011 where she thrived. She was a consistent winner at bingo and participated in all the activities they had to offer. The family would like to thank the staff of Prescott House for all their care and dedication to Dorothy.
Mrs. Campione was predeceased by her husband Joseph and her son John; also her sister Natalie Shepard. She is survived by two children, Joseph Campione, Jr. and his wife Michelle of East Kingston, New Hampshire and Frances Fitzgerald and her husband Robert of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota; her sister Marjorie Hart of Kennebunk, Maine; her brother John Hart of Kennebunk, Maine; and her five grandchildren: Mathew Campione of Nashua, New Hampshire; Elyse Campione of Saco, Maine; Jennifer Wollmering of Mounds Views, Minnesota; Christine Lindberg of Minnetonka, Minnesota; and Sarah Voigt of Eden Prairie, Mn; a nephew and several nieces.
