Allie V. Marshburn, 88, of Teaneck was called home on Friday, March 9, 2012. Allie was born in Durham, NC. Allie moved to NYC at the age of 13, where she completed her education and embarked on a career in nursing. She was a surgical nurse and a labor and delivery nurse employed at several hospitals in New York City including Mount Sinai Hospital and Harlem Hospital. Allie will be remembered as a lifelong community activist and exemplary neighbor. She was an officer of neighborhood associations including the West 138 St. Block Association and the 32nd Police Precinct Neighborhood Association both in Harlem, NYC. She was the founding member and served as President of the Sons and Daughters of Wilson’s Mill, North Carolina Club. She was a long-serving Vice President of the Mid-Stuyvesant Road Block Association and a member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Teaneck Garden Club. She was an active member of Church on the Hill AME Zion and more recently she attended the Presbyterian Church of Teaneck. A Parent of the Year Award winner, Allie and her late husband, James Marshburn raised six foster children together, two of whom they adopted. Allie also helped to change two laws that severely restricted foster parents’ ability to provide for the children in their care. Where there was a battle to be fought in Teaneck for the community, its children, or issues of justice and equality, Allie would be there and in Style! She was not only a good neighbor; she was a great cook, singer, dancer, fashionista, world traveler, and friend. For all of these reasons she was and will always be, the Grand Diva of Stuyvesant Road. Allie was preceded in death by her devoted husband James H. in 1995. Allie was the beloved mother of Antonia Baker (William), David Marshburn (Jacquie), Theresa Cusberts, Willie Cusberts and Harriet Marshburn. Allie was the devoted sister of the late Elizabeth and Nellie McIntosh. She is survived by her sister Else M. Collins, PhD. Allie was Grandmother to Marguerite, Marissa, and Richard and great grandmother to Morgan. She was aunt to Leslie Ramsey (Daniel) and Kimberly Myers (Aubrey) and many great nieces and nephews and Godmother to Ronald Costello, Susan and Chanel O’Neal. She had many cousins, friends and neighbors. A private cremation was requested. In lieu of flowers, donations in Allie’s name to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 417005, Boston, MA 00241, would be appreciated.
