Mrs. Elizabeth (Gigis) Mathews, a resident of North Andover, formerly of Andover and beloved wife of the late Robert L. Mathews, died at the Lawrence General Hospital on March 9, 2012. She was 78 years old.
Born in Lawrence on July 24, 1933, she was the beloved daughter of the late Paul and Sophie Gigis. Mrs. Mathews was a medical secretary for many years and had also been employed by the Central Elementary School in Andover as a secretary. In her spare time Elizabeth enjoyed going to yards sales with her husband, Robert and also enjoyed spending time at Old Orchard Beach in Maine. Before retireing she spent many mornings "holding court" before work at the Lantern Brunch in Andover. She had a special love for animals, especially her cat Tricky and her adored late cat Misty. Forever the perfect hostess, Elizabeth was very fond of having cookouts and gatherings with friends and her late husband, always serving way too much food at these and family gatherings where her neices picked up the habit and continue it to this day.
She will be very sorely missed by her loving son; Christopher Mathews of Haverhill, sisters-in-law; Linda DeStefano of Auburn, Maine and Stella Gigis of Amesbury, brother-in-law; Richard Mathews of Connecticut and many nieces and nephews. She was also the devoted sister of the late Robert Gigis and Helen Spyridakis and sister-in-law of the late Jack Spyridakis.
Her funeral mass was celebrated in Sts. Constantine & Helen Church, 71 Chandler Road, Andover, Monday, March 12, 2012, at 11 AM. Many relatives and friends were in attendance. Calling hours were held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover, Sunday, March 11, 2012, from 4 to 8 PM. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover.
