Funeral from the J. Frank Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, (Rte 123) Brockton, Monday at 8am. Funeral Mass in St. Edward Church at 9am. Burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Obituary Information
Mr. Sarson died Thursday after a period of failing health; he would have turned 74 on Sunday February 24, 2002. Born in Brockton, he was the son of the late John A. and Laura (Duverger) Sarson, Jr. He was a lifelong resident of the city, attending Brockton schools and graduating from Brockton High School, Class of 1946. During his years at Brockton High, he was a member of the 1945 undefeated Brockton High Football team, receiving the game ball on Thanksgiving Day.
After High School, he served in the US Army during WWII, serving in occupied Japan after war’s end. He saw the remains of Hiroshima. After the war he continued his education and graduated from Brown University in Rhode Island in 1952. At Brown he lettered as a defensive back for the football team. He had his best game while playing with a broken jaw against Princeton’s Heisman Trophy Winner Dick Kasmier. After graduating from Brown he continued his education and received his Masters Degree in Education from Bridgewater State College.
Mr. Sarson coached football for over 30 seasons at Milton, Plymouth and Brockton High Schools as well as semi professional teams, the Whitman Town Team and the Brockton Pro’s. He was inducted into both Plymouth and Brockton School’s Hall of Fame. He was Athletic Director in Brockton for 17 years taking over a program of 13 teams in 1969 and building it to over 100 different teams at its peak. He was instrumental in the implementation of Title IX granting females equal rights with males in team sports. He was voted Athletic Director of the year by his peers in 1985, and retired in 1986.
He loved antiquing, Pinehurst Beach in Wareham and Brockton School sports. He often commented that the thing he was proudest of was his five children.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia J. (Clifford) Sarson, 5 children John “Jay” Sarson, of Hanover, Jean M. Sarson of E. Bridgewater, Tom Sarson of Lewis Center, OH, Ruth A. Terry of Katy, TX and Richard Sarson of Atlanta GA. He also leaves 9 grandchildren.
