Editha "Lydia" (Pina) Barnes, 78, of New Bedford died February 29, 2012 at Brandon Woods of New Bedford after a long illness.
She was the wife of the late Milton Barnes.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary C. (Costa-Gomes) Pina, she lived in New Bedford most of her life.
Mrs. Barnes was formerly employed by Sacred Heart Home as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
Survivors include 3 children, Frank B. Slaughter of Las Vegas; Emmalin Lopes of New Bedford; and Melissa Swingler of New Jersey; 3 sisters, Alice Glaspie and Wanita London, both of New Bedford; and Rosalie Brewster of Colorado; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was the mother of the late Maurice B. Slaughter and Robert Slaughter; and the sister of the late Luiz Pina, Frank Pina, Beatrice Hemsley, Albion Pina, Joseph Pina, Manuel Pina, Alexander Pina and Dominga Grace.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Monday at 12 Noon in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Visiting hours Sunday from 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
