Francis "Smitty" Smith Sr., 76, of North Stonington, died April 5th at Pendleton in Mystic.
He was born October 21, 1927 in New London son of Charles Smith Sr. and Ethel (Osbourne) Smith. He was married to Agnes (Maderia) Smith on September 27, 1947 and to Tina (Orr) Smith on November 1, 1968. He was predeceased by both wives.
He worked for Thames River Tube in Ashaway for 26 years, retiring in 1992. He previously worked for Sonoco Products Company in Mystic for 26 years.
He was a member of the Polish American Club of Mystic, the Calabrese Society of Westerly, and a Life Member of the German Club of Mystic.
He is survived by his three sons and a step-daughter, Albert J. Smith of Ledyard, Francis Smith Jr. of Pawcatuck, Charles Smith Sr. of Pawcatuck and Rebecca Mitchell of Mystic.
He is survived by four sisters and four brothers Maude Whipple of Mystic, Dorothy DeMoura of Noank, Charlotte Whipple of Pawcatuck, Bessie Stafford of Mystic, Robert Smith Sr., of Mystic, Frederick Smith of Palmer MA, George Smith of Ledyard and Nathan Smith of New London. Thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive him. Two sisters and two brothers predeceased him; Ethel Smith, Barbara Smith, Charles Smith Jr., and Albert Smith Sr. He was also predeceased by a close friend, Mildred Long.
His family will greet relatives and friends at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, historic downtown Mystic, on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Thursday at 11am at the funeral home with the Rev. Lisabeth M. Gustafson, Pastor of the Old Mystic Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
