GLOUCESTER: Ruby V. (Pearson) Curtis, 93, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012 with her family by her side in the Beverly Hospital. She was the wife of the late Walter L. Curtis who died in 1993.
Born in New Sweden, Maine on June 11, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Axel and Leah (Perkins) Pearson. She had resided in New Sweden, Maine for several years before moving to Gloucester in 1948. She was a graduate of Caribou High School class of 1936 and the Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing. Following graduation, she spent a year as a nurse at a Navaho Indian Reservation in Arizona.
Ruby was employed as a registered nurse at both the Massachusetts General Hospital and Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester for many years. She loved to spend time at the Rose Baker Senior Center playing cribbage and bingo with her many friends. She was also a member of the Gloucester Cribbage Club and the Calvary Baptist Church.
She enjoyed her trips with her family to California, river rafting in the Grand Canyon and spending summers camping in Maine. She would even take motorcycle rides to and from work.
She is survived by her three sons, David P. Curtis, Loran R. Curtis and his wife, Pamela and John Walter Curtis and his wife, Christine all of Gloucester; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Axelleah Coombs of Penobscot, Maine; a sister-in-law, Clara Curtis of Gloucester and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by a sister, Hazel Curtis and a brother, Earl Pearson.
Her funeral service will be privately held at the convenience of the family. There are no visiting hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Rose Baker Senior Center, 6 Manuel F. Lewis St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
