Gerald W. “Gerry” Mackedon 76 of Marshfield and Port St Lucie, FL. Formerly of Brockton, Feb 24, after a brief illness. Beloved husband of the late Maryann (Simtick) Mackedon. Loving father of Deborah Ritz and her husband Patrick of Marshfield, Donna Mckenzie and her husband Bryan of Marshfield, G. William Mackedon Jr. and his wife Michele of Long Island, NY., Kim McNeil and her husband Brian of Marshfield, Karen LeBlanc of Pembroke and Brian Mackedon of Marshfield. Dear grandfather of Patrick, Jeslin, Ben and Sam Ritz, Gunnar and Cole McKenzie, Gerry Mackedon, Jack, Kelly, Kate and Jane McNeil and Christopher and Austin LeBlanc. Son of the late Robert G. Sr. and Mildred M. (White) Mackedon. Brother of Cindy Byers and her husband Edward of Easton and Elizabeth Hurst and her husband Scott of Brockton and the late Robert Mackedon. Dear friend of Awanda Sidow. Also survived many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Brockton Gerry graduated from Coyle Cassidy High School in Taunton. For several years after his graduation he worked as an iron worker and for the Boston Gas Company. Gerry received his first chance in the golf business as an assistant pro at the Pine Valley Country Club in West Bridgewater for PGA professional Ray Ladd. Gerry turned professional at the age of 32 and received his first head professional position at the Brockton Country Club in Brockton, he held that position for eight years before relocating to the Norfolk Country Club in Westwood for ten years. At the age of 50 he became the head professional at the Country Club of Halifax for nine years before returning home to Brockton as the head professional at the DW Field Golf Course until his retirement at the age of 65. After his retirement he remained an active teacher in the South Shore area. During Gerry’s golfing career he achieved eight holes-in-one and at the age of 51 he won the NEPGA Championship which qualified him for a Senior PGA Tournament at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord. On May 1, 1985 Gerry shot a record 29 on the back nine of the Colonial Country Club and in 1992 he won a PGA event shooting a 7 under par 65 at the PGA National in Florida. Gerry has lived in Marshfield since 1990.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday February 28, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the MacDonald Funeral Home 1755 Ocean St Rte 139 Marshfield. Funeral from the funeral home Wednesday February 29, at 10:00 am followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Christine’s Church 1295 Main St Marshfield at 11:00 am.
Interment will be in the Couch Cemetery Marshfield.
