Obituary

CHICOPEE – U. Raymond Goyette, 87, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, February 5, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life from Holyoke Medical Center surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on September 21, 1924, a beloved son of the late George U. and Eva (Piquette) Goyette. He was raised in Chicopee, attended local schools, was a lifelong resident of the city and lived in Fairview since 1954. Ray served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and attained the rank of Baker Third Class. He served aboard the USS Hamul, the USS Baxter and the USS Tawakoni. He received the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal with Two Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Chicopee and then attended the Wilton School in New York City where he became a master baker and learned the art of specialty cake decorating. He was employed for over 42 years at Langelier’s Bakery in Holyoke where he was well known for making many of the area’s wedding and specialty cakes. Following his retirement, he worked part time for the Rock Valley Tool Company in Easthampton. Active in his faith, Ray was a longtime communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. He was a former member of the Moose Family Center Lodge 1849 and the Willimansett American Legion Post 353, both in Chicopee. Ray enjoyed his leisure time at home and constructed miniature doll houses for all of his grandchildren and for many charitable organizations in the area that would raffle them as prizes. He was a quiet man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his devoted wife and best friend, Lorraine T. (Paquette) Goyette. They were married on November 23, 1946 in Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Willimansett and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. He also leaves: his loving children, Gary R. Goyette and his wife, Linda, and Donna M. Moran and her husband, William, all of Chicopee and Paula J. Moran and her husband, Brian, of Weirton, West Virginia; his six cherished grandchildren who affectionately called him “Pépère”, Justin Goyette and his wife, Kathy, Jessie Goyette and his wife, Tricia, Laurie Moran and her husband, Dan LeFever, Mary Outhuse and her husband, Dan, Brendan Moran and Andrea Verrengia and her husband, Garrick; his three cherished great-grandchildren, Aiden Goyette, Megan Outhuse and Ryan Outhuse; his two dear sisters, Jeanne Wells and her husband, John, of Enfield, CT and Estelle Walunas of Southampton, MA; and his many dear nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brother and sister-in-law, Robert Goyette and his wife, Vera. Since, 2007 Ray was a resident of the Holyoke Soldiers Home. His family would like to personally thank the doctors, nurses and the entire staff for their compassionate care and assistance during his long journey home. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, February 10, 2012, beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:45 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with Military Honors will follow the Mass in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Soldiers Home in Holyoke, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040.
