CHICOPEE – Catherine M. (Zimmerman) Slenzak, 84, of the Fairview section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Friday, February 10, 2012. She passed into Eternal Life from Holyoke Medical Center surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Lewisburg, West Virginia on July 27, 1927, a beloved daughter of the late H. Frank and Ruth M. (Landers) Zimmerman. She was raised in Lewisburg, graduated from Lewisburg High School and lived there for many years. On June 20,1953, she married her beloved husband and best friend, Theodore R. Slenzak at the Lewisburg Methodist Church in West Virginia and together they were blessed with over 58 years of happiness together. Her husband, “Herby”, served in the United States Army for over 20 years and together they settled in the Fairview section of Chicopee around 1964. Catherine enjoyed playing bingo and was well known at many of the area bingo games. During her quiet time at home, she enjoyed knitting and being a homemaker to her family. Besides her beloved husband, she leaves: her loving children, Jerri L. Brueno of Chicopee; and Jon Slenzak of England; her loving grandchildren, Krista Brueno of Easthampton and Michael Brueno of Chicopee; her dear brothers, Joseph Zimmerman and William Zimmerman; her dear sisters, Lois Crooke and Shirley Bugeia; and several dear nephews and nieces. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her dear brothers and sister, Charles Zimmerman, Frank Zimmerman, Jr. and Elizabeth Richmond. A private Service of Committal will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to the D’Amour Center for Cancer Care, c/o Development Office, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01199.
