CHICOPEE – Stanislaw Smolen, 90, of the Fairview section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Thursday, January 19, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life from his daughter Donna’s home surrounded by her loving care and comfort. He was born at home in Chicopee on January 15, 1922, a beloved son of the late Joseph and Elenora (Jedziniak) Smolen and in 1939, graduated from Holyoke High School. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II with Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 28th Infantry and attained the rank of Corporal. He served in the Campaigns of Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland. He received a Purple Heart with One Oak Leaf Cluster, the American Theater Ribbon, a Combat Infantry Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with Three Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his military service, he furthered his education and graduated from the Capital Radio Engineering School in Washington, DC. He became a radio and television repairman and was self-employed for several years. He later worked as an electronic technician at the Hamilton Standard Company in Windsor Locks, Connecticut and retired in 1985. He was a communicant of the former Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Willimansett and was currently a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend of 24 years, Marguerite E. “Marge” (Lapointe) Smolen who was Called Home on July 17, 2007; his loving son, Rodney Smolen; his dear brother, John Smolen; and his dear sisters, Stella Howard, Genevieve Lemelin and Anna McDonald. He leaves: his loving children, Donna M. Mooney and her husband, James of Chicopee, Florence A. Beauvais of Florida and Bette Masse and her husband, Kevin of Chicopee; his seven cherished grandchildren; his 11 cherished great-grandchildren; his dear sisters, Doris Mazurowski of Chicopee and Victoria Williams of South Hadley; and many dear nephews and nieces. His funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, January 24, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 (funeral home will open at 10 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with Military Honors will follow the Mass at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, January 23, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
