LEICESTER: Thomas J. Hanley, age 81, a former longtime resident of Tewksbury, died Friday, April 2, 2004 at the Meadows of Leicester.
He was the husband of Bernice (Lucas) Hanley who died in 1974.
Born in Boston on May 4, 1922, he was the son of the late Thomas and Nora (Kennedy) Hanley.
Mr. Hanley was raised in the Brighton section of Boston.
He was graduated from Saint Columkille High School of Brighton in 1940.
Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Hanley was honorably discharged on March 31, 1953 having been awarded the rank of Sergeant.
Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as an operator and bus driver for the M.B.T.A. in Boston, where he worked for 30 years.
Mr. Hanley moved from Brighton to Tewksbury in 1953. He resided in Tewksbury for over 40 years and was a communicant of Saint Williams Parish.
Mr. Hanley enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by 1 son; Joseph T. Hanley and his wife Pamela (Schonberg) of Leicester; 3 grandchildren; Alisha E., Paul M. and Elizabeth R. Hanley all of Leicester; 1 brother; Edward Hanley of Sanford, ME; many nieces, nephews and friends from his former Chester Street, Tewksbury neighborhood. Mr. Hanley was the brother of the late Catherine Barr, formerly of Medford.
Calling hours Monday 5-8 p.m. at the FARMER & DEE FUNERAL HOME, 16 LEE ST., TEWKSBURY. Funeral Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home. Funeral Mass Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, W. Roxbury.
