Obituary

John H. “Mac” McCarthy 77, of Franklin, died peacefully, at home surrounded by his family, Monday February 20, 2012 following a brief illness. He was the husband of Nancy M. (Costello) McCarthy.
Born November 18, 1934 in Boston, a son of the late John H. and Mary E. (O’Brien) McCarthy he was a former resident of Hyde Park and had lived in Franklin for the past 47 years.
He was raised and educated in the Boston area, and was a graduate of Boston College High School, he furthered his education at Northeastern University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Mr. McCarthy was a retired accountant for the Foxboro Company and following his retirement, he worked as a controller for the Federal Products Company in Providence, Rhode Island.
Mr. McCarthy served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and was honorably discharged in June 1961.
He treasured time spent with his family, fishing, golfing, camping, was a lifelong Red Sox fan, and being at his summer home in Denmark, Maine. He was a former member of the Franklin Zoning Board of Appeals for over 25 years and served as chairman, a former board member of Franklin Youth Hockey, was a member of Franklin VFW Post, and a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.
In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a son John M. McCarthy and his wife Wendy of Minnesota, 4 daughters Patricia A. Hauck of Raynham, MaryEllen Assad and her husband Kenneth of Franklin, NancyLee Wasnewsky and her husband Thomas of Medway and Paula Savini and her husband Peter of South Yarmouth, a brother Brian McCarthy and his wife Cindy of Norwood, a son in law Robert Ballou of Foxboro. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.
He was the father of the late Sharon M. McCarthy-Ballou and brother of the late Joan Brunelli.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral with military honors Friday February 24th, at 9:15AM from the Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. Franklin, www.oterifuneralhome.com, with a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church 1 Church Sq. at 10AM.
Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Calling hours are Thursday Feb. 23rd, from 4-8PM.
