John E. Greenip, age 91, formerly of New Milford, New Jersey died on Thursday, February 16, 2012. John was the beloved husband of the late Patricia Galvin Greenip. Devoted Father and Father-in-Law of Peggy Lynn and John Mockler and Pamela and Kenneth Hoogerhyde. Loving Grandfather of Sean, Meredith, Ryan and his wife Maria Mockler, Sara and her husband Eric White, and Brandon Hoogerhyde. Cherished Great- Grandfather of Justin, Jack, Johnny, Daniel, Ethan, and Colin. John graduated from Westwood High School where he was a stand-out, four letter athlete whose nickname was “Ox.” After graduating, John worked for the Hackensack Water Company and played semi-professional football with a Pascack Valley team. John’s outstanding performance on the football field drew the attention of the New York Giant’s scouts. Before he could join the Giants, John enlisted in the United States Navy. John served for six years in the United States Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged as a Fire Controlman, Second Class. He received a World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and a Good Conduct Medal. John served on the USS Indiana, Tolman, Davison, Carmick, and Moale. In 1950, John was recalled into service for the Korean War. Upon discharge from the service, he joined the New Milford Police Department as a patrolman and retired as Lieutenant. John was a member of the American Legion Post 217 and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post in New Milford and the American Legion Post of North Haledon. Visiting will be on Friday, February 24, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 268 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell. A funeral service will begin at 10:30 AM at the funeral home on Saturday, February 25. Private burial.
