Obituary

James P. "Jim" Mahoney, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed away into eternal life on Friday, February 17, 2012, at the Courtyard Nursing Home in Medford following a short illness. He was 94 years old.

Jim was born in Chicopee, MA, on January 27, 1918 to the late Daniel J. and Bridget F. (O'Rourke) Mahoney. Jim grew up in Charlestown and attended the Boston Public School system. He enlisted into the United States Coast Guard on September 27, 1939 and served his country proudly and honorably on United States Coast Guard Cutters Duane, Campbell and Oak during World War II. He was discharged on October 1, 1945 with the rank of Boatswain's Mate, First Class. Jim worked as a carpenter under the General Service Administration for the Federal Government for over 35 years. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Campbell Association. He enjoyed fishing and walking around his beloved Charlestown smoking his pipe.

Jim is the beloved husband of the late Mary F. (Kinsley) Mahoney. He is the devoted father of Boston Fire Department Lieutenant James P. Mahoney Jr. (Marine Unit) and his wife Cecelia "Cissy" of Charlestown, Daniel L. Mahoney of Reading and Boston Police Lieutenant Paul S. Mahoney (C-11) and his wife Kimberly of Reading. He is the loving Pa to James, Daniel, Neil, Brendan, Patrick and Maeve Mahoney. He is the beloved brother of Margaret Driscoll of Charlestown, Retired Boston Police Officer John Mahoney and his wife Clara of Charlestown and the late Charles, Daniel and Francis Mahoney, Mary Barone and Helena Dever. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jim's Funeral on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, at 10 a.m. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m.
