June Elizabeth (Shafer) Darrow, 81, of 133 South Broad St., Stonington Arms, Pawcatuck, died Monday at The Westerly Hospital after a brief illness.
Mrs. Darrow was born in Ledyard on June 16, 1922 the daughter of Frank D. and Effie M. (Whipple) Shafer. She attended local schools and was a 1940 graduate of Fitch Sr. High School.
She was married to Leroy John Darrow Sr. at St. James Episcopal Church on June 16, 1941. They were celebrating their 63rd year of marriage.
Mrs. Darrow was employed as Manager of the former Kresgees Store in New London for 15 years before retiring in 1983.
Most notably, June will be remembered for her artistic abilities. Her acclaimed crotcheting skills were well-known as she had crotcheted over 1000 afghans, among other items, over the course of her life. Her art of perfection and attention to detail with her work impressed family and friends alike.
She also enjoyed drawing , playing weekly "Tuesday Night Bingo" at Stonington Arms, and was an accomplished organist.
In addition to her husband, June leaves a daughter and son-in law, Sharon D. and Richard E. Morang of Preston, 2 sons and daughter-in-laws, Leroy John Darrow Jr. & Jeanne Darrow of Oakdale, Kim Alan Darrow & Celia Darrow of Norwich, and a son, Franklin W. Darrow of Niantic., 8 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, a great-great grandchild; and two brothers, Vernard Shafer and Ronald Shafer.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred Shafer Darrow and Katherine Shafer Merrit.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 6-8pm. Her funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 11am.
Burial will follow in Poquetanuck Cemetery.
