George S. Cole, of Somerville a retired purchasing agent for MIT and a World War II Veteran, died Wednesday at home in the loving care of his daughter. He was 94.
Mr. Cole was born in Smyrna, NY, the son of the late Lewis and the late Lorenda (Pike) Cole. He was raised on his family farm and enjoyed the outdoors. During the war he served in the Army as a military policeman and was part of the coastal defense. He was assigned with an anti submarine group and while on patrol, his ship was torpedoed and George spent three days adrift on a life raft with fellow survivors.
After the war he was married eventually settling in Somerville. He remained an avid outdoorsman, enjoying boating, skiing, fishing and ice boating. He was a member of the Charles River Yacht Club. He worked at Lincoln Labs in Lexington and then enjoyed a 25-year career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, until he retired.
The beloved husband of the late Frances (Ragusa) Cole, he leaves his loving and devoted daughter Lois Cole. Predeceased by his brother Glen, George is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call Friday morning, February 3rd from 9 to 11 at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford with a service conducted in the funeral home at 11 AM, Rev’d. Anthony Jarek Glidden, officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Oak Grove Cemetery.
