Obituary

John M. Hewitt, 93, of Ashland, died on January 28, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Leora L. (Allen) Hewitt with whom he shared 68 years of marriage.
Son of the late John and Annie (Grogen) Hewitt, he was born in Birmingham, England, and came to Canada and then America as a young boy settling in Natick. He was educated in the Natick Public Schools and a graduate of Natick High School – Class of 1936. Mr. Hewitt joined the Army National Guard in 1936 and served until being called into active duty in the United States Army in 1943. A proud member of the “Greatest Generation”, he served in Oahu, Maui, Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and Luzon during WWII. After being honorably discharged from military service in 1946, Mr. Hewitt began his professional career as a machinist with Warren Machine Works in Natick. In 1956 he became an instrument technician with J.L. Water, Inc. of Framingham and continued on with them through their merger with Millipore Corp. until he retired as a supervisor in 1983. An avid boater, Mr. Hewitt enjoyed spending time near the ocean at his home South Yarmouth. He was a former resident of Natick and Dover prior to moving to Ashland in 1953. Mr. Hewitt was a past Junior Vice-Commander of the American Legion in Natick. A loving husband and father, he found great happiness when spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his son John P. Hewitt and his wife Kathy of Milford; his grandchildren, Mark Hewitt and his wife Erin of Wellesley, Melissa Burnham and her husband Rodney of Milford, and Robert Hewitt of Milford; his great-granddaughter, Brandy; his sister, Norma Scott of Maine; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend Mr. Hewitt’s funeral from the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park St. (at Natick Common) NATICK on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 9:15 AM to be followed by his Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 from 3-7 PM.
