Daniel F. Hayes, 84, of New Bedford died Sunday March 28, 2004 at St. Luke's Hosptial after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Christine M. (Constant) Hayes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Patrick and Anna (Devlin) Hayes, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of St. James Church.
Mr. Hayes was formerly employed by Southeastern Massachusetts University as an electrician. A master electrician, he had also been the proprietor of Hayes Electric. He was a former wire inspector under Mayor Francis J. Lawler for the City of New Bedford.
Mr. Hayes served as a Councillor-at-Large in New Bedford for 25 years and twice held the position of City Council President. He was elected a State Representative in 1971. Mr. Hayes was a member of the Whaling City Post 3196 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Post 1. He was a lifetime member of the Massachusetts Legislators Association.
During World World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel S. Hayes of Florida and Thomas M. Hayes of New Bedford; two daughters, Kathleen Maciel and Roberta Canastra, both of Dartmouth ; three sisters, Patricia Fal and Winifred Szynal, both of New Bedford and Constance Andrews of California; four grandchildren, Denise Kaplan of Colorado, Frank Maciel of Florida, Daniel Hayes and Christopher Hayes, both of Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Sister Mary Eileen Hayes, R.S.M., Frances Hayes, and Christopher A. Hayes.
