Dr. Robert E. Pontone, age 88 of Leonia, NJ, formerly of Ridgefield Park and, prior to that, Teaneck, died on January 27, 2012. Bob is survived by his beloved wife Dolores (formerly Topoleski) with whom he was married for 62 years. He was the devoted father of Robert E. Pontone, Jr., Mary Elizabeth Pontone Bertschy (Ray), James G. Pontone (Elaine) and Suzanne G. Pontone Schaaff (Harold). He was the dear brother of the late Dr. Andre Pontone (Kathleen) of Morganville, NJ. He was the devoted son of Dr. Michael and Juin Pontone of Bayonne, NJ. He was Pop Pop to 8 loving grandchildren, whom he adored: Jessica Bertschy, Harold, Christian and Nicole Schaaff and Maya, Cleo, Lana and Carter Pontone. He was a beloved uncle to 12 nieces and nephews. Dr. Pontone was an Internist in Ridgefield Park for 27 years until he retired in 1999 and, prior to that, had his practice in Teaneck for 18 years. He was on staff at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck for 45 years, where he was the oldest physician on staff when he retired in 1999. During his years in practice in Ridgefield Park, he served as Police Surgeon for the Ridgefield Park Police Department. Robert graduated from Georgetown Medical School and went directly into the service during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Africa at the US base in Tripoli. He served as a Physician in the Army, Navy and, finally, the Air Force, where he attained the rank of Captain. Robert was born in Jersey City and brought up in Bayonne, NJ, where he met his beautiful wife Dolores Top, as she was known. He graduated at the top of his class from St. Peter’s Prep and St. Peter’s College before going on to medical school. Friends and family will be received on Monday, January 30th from 2-4pm & 7-9pm at Volk Leber Funeral Home, 789 Teaneck Rd. Teaneck. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday the 31st at 10:00 am at St. John the Evangelist in Leonia. In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Name Hospital in his honor would be appreciated.
